Who are the heroes in our lives? What makes them unique? What makes them special? The definition of a hero often depends on the lens, a person chooses to look at their traits. Often times people will decide what is or isn’t a hero based on the audience they are attempting to appeal to, but the true hero is something else.

A hero is generally a normal human being or a main fictional protagonist who, against insurmountable odds, continually combats through incredible feats of strength, courage or ingenuity. While often times this is depicted through superpowers, sometimes it is because of personal flaws, like a villain is much more cunning than someone who has inherent goodness; a villain is oftentimes much more powerful physically than their hero. Like most often times, however, the real heroes are much more than super powers and attributes. They are humans with human weaknesses.

One example of a hero could be your neighbor who always comes by when you need something done around the house. Perhaps your mother always came home from work so she could see if the mailman had delivered the letter that arrived on her front door. Or your mechanic who despite his vast knowledge and skill didn’t think he was capable of fixing your car without asking you first. These are all heroes to you. You recognize their humanity.

One form of heroism that is not often times seen as such is the act of risking one’s life for one’s country. There are many heroes in the armed forces who willingly risk their lives in order to protect us. There are many heroes in the medical profession who sacrifice their lives day in and day out to help others. These are all heroes as well. Even those who choose careers as superheroes are in fact heroes to some degree.

Of course, the most famous heroes of our time are Superman, Batman, and Iron Man. These three heroes embody certain ideals that are common among all heroes. They are all devoted to justice, honesty, and commitment. All three heroes often times have to sacrifice their lives in order to save others and they continue to fight on even after death.

No matter who you are or what you do, heroes are always in our lives. If you are not a hero at least you can learn to be one. The best way to learn about these heroes is to read about them or to experience them for yourself.
