Happiness is defined by Merriam Webster as the state of being satisfied with your life as it now is or with what you think you would be. The word happiness is usually used in the broader context of emotional or psychological states, which include pleasant or contentment with everything ranging from work, relationships, to extreme joy or contentment. However, it is also used in the narrower context of life happiness, subjective well-Being, flourishing and overall well being. In fact, happiness can be a state of mind that can vary from person to person, as it is a subjective state that differs from person to person. For instance, in one survey, some students reported being extremely happy while others were not. And, happiness can also vary with cultural differences.

For better understanding of happiness, it is important to discuss its relationship with both physical and mental health. As indicated by numerous researches and studies, happiness can foster good physical health; in fact, there are a number of studies indicating that people who are more happy with life have higher energy levels, stronger immune system, lower blood pressure, better sleep and a greater ability to cope with physical and mental stress. Similarly, there are also a number of studies that indicate that those who are happy with their lives have stronger physical defenses against heart attack, stroke, cancer, and other illnesses. Therefore, being happy with your life and your health may mean a better quality of life and greater longevity.

On the other hand, studies also show that those who are more stressed out have low self-esteem, higher stress levels, poor memory, poor concentration and attention span and are more prone to sickness and diseases. Stressed out individuals are diagnosed and treated with different mental health conditions including depression, anxiety and mood disorders. Indeed, for individuals who are trying to get sick, there is a definite connection between happiness and better health.

However, the importance of happiness does not only apply to staying healthy and mentally sound but also to the individual’s appearance and attractiveness. Many people are concerned about their physical appearance and how they look. Most people would look at weight and appearance as major factors when it comes to their happiness. However, there is one more important factor that has to be mentioned here and that is the power of positive psychology. Positive psychology suggests that the key to happiness lies in feeling good about yourself rather than focusing on your imperfect appearance.

What is this feeling of worth anyway? The meaning of happiness can be determined by looking at two contrasting examples. An unhappy worker who lacks pleasure in her job will lack the long-term satisfaction that a happy person who enjoys his work has. In addition, an individual who lacks happiness in her personal relationships will also not have a long-term satisfaction from those relationships.

According to research, this kind of emotional well-being is actually learned and not hardwired into an individual’s system. The good thing about this kind of emotional well-being is that it can be developed and nurtured. This means that we can help ourselves to build good relationships with others. In addition, developing good relationships is also important for our physical well being. Thus, the pursuit of happiness may be directly linked to the pursuit of physical well being.
